ChatNetZero (beta) is a large language model (LLM)-based chatbot and question-answering platform able to decipher the complicated nuances of “net zero” and determine the credibility of decarbonization plans set by businesses, governments, and financial institutions.

The world must reach net-zero emissions by mid-century if we are to avoid the most dangerous climate change impacts. But what does “net zero” actually mean, and how do we decipher who is taking credible action to get there? General LLMs, such as ChatGPT , are not attune to the nuances of net-zero targets. They often fabricate false, but generally convincing statements when queried for specific details regarding an entity’s decarbonization efforts.

In an era where the integrity of net-zero targets is translating into legal liability, consumer confidence, and our ability to meet collective climate goals, accurate and timely information is essential.

Despite the rapid advancement of Generative AI such as ChatGPT , the technology still has 2 major limitations that stops the climate change community from using it:

• Black Box - The answers from other AI-based chatbots cannot be verified from a credible source.
• Hallucination - the AI tends to produce fabricated false but generally convincing answers

ChatNetZero is created to solve these 2 bottlenecks:

• The algorithm is fine-tuned using a collection of credible reports and data verified by experts from the Net Zero Tracker, so ChatNetzero’s responses are sourced from these verified documents.
• We developed a state-of-the-art anti-hallucination algorithm to make sure that there’s little misinformation produced.

In future releases, we will connect the platform to search live information from the internet, and allow users to upload their own documents and evaluate them against the expert opinion from the Net Zero Tracker reports.

We are rolling out more features and constantly improving the performance of the platform. Upcoming improvements on our roadmap includes:

• Follow-up conversations - we will enable user to ask follow up questions in the next release
• Multiple entities - we will improve the accuracy of answer when more than 5 actors are mentioned in the same query
• Speed - we are working to improve the Q&A speed of the algorithm
• Language - we are testing the capability of answering queries in multiple languages
• Complex analytical tasks - we will gradually add more complex analytical functions to the chatbot, such as interpreting information from large data tables, etc.

It is the definitive register of net zero targets set by countries, states and regions, cities and large companies. It shines a light on the existence (or lack thereof) of pledges and parameters of integrity — for example, whether an entity has:

• set interim targets
• published a plan outlining how it will reach net zero
• committed to report its progress annually
• is clear about the scopes of emissions contained in its target, and planned use of offsets.

The Net Zero Tracker complements the work of organizations such as CDP, Climate Action Tracker and SBTi, performing a different function for the climate change community.

It is the essential transparency tool through which stakeholders of all kinds can hold governments and companies to account – rigorous enough for analysts and decision-makers, accessible enough for journalists and campaigners.

ChatNetZero is still in its beta form, and like all large language models, there are some questions that it can respond to well, but others where it may struggle. For example, you may want to know whether Company X has set a “good” net zero target.
